Orphan's Last Stand

The time has come, the Orphans take to the stage for the last time this Saturday at The Beachcomber in Meggies. It will no doubt be mental, I was at the gig at The Spiders Web in Jan and the Orphanites were on form, mental, equal top in my fav gigs of all time. I have to make a mention for John Kennedy of XFM Xposure, he’s the man, full support for the Orphans from Trophies til the end. Any new bands out there send him your stuff, he’ll play you coz you’re good not because of who your PR agent is. Here’s my fav Orphan image brilliantly captured by Orphanite Luke who’s now www.artmelt.com . So long and thanks for all the fish.
Thankyou & Goodbye - Orphan Boy Gig

Orphan Boy will be playing their final gig at Cleethorpes Beachcomber on September 10th. Is this a sad ending or a happy ending? Well, personally we felt that we needed to bring this chapter of our lives to a close so that we can look forward to the next. And this way we will be going out on a high rather than letting the whole thing fizzle out and so we all agreed to give the orphanites one last sweaty gig.

What started back on December 8th 2004 at the Cleethorpes Beachcomber will be ending at the same venue, I (Smithy) can remember rolling up with a guitar and drum machine, and playing to a mixed bag crowd of old school punks and young kids in bands and to a daunting cockney guy called Mick Jones from The Clash. It was his (Mick Jones) defying words that rattled through me head constantly about getting a band, and from then on, Chris Day joined followed not long by Rob Cross. It was The Spiders Web were we called it our home, rehearsing constantly in the function room before doing our first gig there, which was a legendary to us and all people who was inside, sweat dripped of the ceiling as 200 kids went mental to anything that had a beat. We also crafted out our own nights called Up The Racket at The Spiders Web, some very good and memorable nights.

We then found ourselves being picked up by a record label in Scotland called Grace Records in which we released Billys England and B-Side Postcode, and then finally packing our bags to move to the North West suburbs of Manchester to further the field for success. Our first Manchester gig as actual residents was on an extremely cold winter night, the crowd looking very snotty nosed, and amongst that kleenex clad lot was independent label Concrete Recordings who we later signed too. The very first meet with Concrete Recordings was in the jam rooms at Big Fish, Manchester, were we was to play all the songs we currently had to both of them, but unfortunately we was given the tiniest rehearsal room with a screamo punk band on each side drowning every single song, chord or word we attempted to play and speak. But it didnt go to bad, they did greet us with a good chicken selection from the chinese buffet near by and a cooler box full of beer, which settled us all nicely. So from there we shook hands and walked away happy lads, and an arranged signing night and celebration was put in place at The Oyster Bar were our friends and Concrete Recordings drank, sang and fell about to us signing a two album deal, a night that we will never forget. So its from there we released our first album Shop Local along with singles Trophies Of Love, Satellites, Postcode, Alderley Edge and Stilettos and then the second album Pasion, Pain and Loyalty with singles, Popsong and Some Frontier and now as a final release the lovely acoustic All Romance Will Fail.

Going in to the music industry as little fish, we did do good for a band from Grimsby, having played Glastonbury twice, Secret Garden Party, Kendall Calling, Wickerman Festival as well as many others. Both albums and singles did very good on the press and media front getting airplay on BBC Radio 1 and 6, shows like Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe as well as XFM and also donning the heights of being played on MTV2 Gonzo and NME TV. We also got Shop Local in the top 100 unheard albums ever, coming in at 52 above Queen. As well as the radio and TV play we graced the stage with many decent artists from Pete Doherty, Glasvegas, The Courteeners, Jarvis Cocker, The Twang, The Rifles, The Whip to name a few as well as our closest and favourite bands in Grimsby, Glenrothes, Manchester and Morecambe.

Its a frustrating business at whatever level, you get your highs and then you get your kick in teeth moments and we have had plenty, but for what we have achieved none of us would swap it for the world, three lads in a Fiesta bobbing up and down the country was what its all about. Although we were never able to sustain a living out of it, we’ve had six years rich in experience and creativity. There’s a scrapbook full of spirited fight-backs, stage invasions and service stations. And there’s the legacy of the two albums, eight singles, seven videos and various bits of live footage that mean people can keep listening to us long after we’re all dead. First point of call is www.orphanboy.co.uk if anybody is curious.

And so be it, if you want to see us for a last time then I guess it would be wise to pop along to the Beachcomber on September 10th were we will be bowing out along with guests The Heartbreaks, The So & So's, From A City In Ruins and Liar Liar, also Djs Guy Keeble and James McKenzie. Its guaranteed to be a special night with folk coming from all over the UK for it, and tickets are selling quicker than we thought. So anybody wanting to purchase a ticket can do from Cleethorpes Beachcomber, Solid Entertainments, The No1 Pub or if alternatively email beachedup@live.co.uk to arrange another method of purchase. Tickets are priced £8 with limited £10 on the door. Door times 19:30pm till 02:00am. We would also like to thank everyone who has shown there support since day one, its been a journey but all roads must end like this! Cheers Smiffy Orphan

Orphan Boy Announce New Album & Single

Orphan Boy are proud to announce the release of their album 'Passion, Pain and Loyalty' on the
2nd August 2010. The single 'Pop Song' will precede the album, on the 19th July 2010. Both single
and album will be released through Concrete Recordings. The album Passion, Pain and Loyalty will be available
digitally and on CD, the single 'Pop Song' will be available as a digital release only.

Orphan Boy are a rock/pop trio that formed in Cleethorpes in February 2005. They soon got the fuck out of
there and moved to Manchester where they signed to Concrete Recordings. (Though two of them are now back in their beloved Cleethorpes)

They began by making a kind of post-post punk music in which choruses were forbidden and lots of guitar strings got snapped.
This became known as Two-Chord Council Pop, the culmination of which was their (classic) debut album, 'Shop Local',
released in 2008.

Orphan Boy have played Glastonbury four times, twice under an alias. The orphans have a loyal fanbase, known formally as the Bebop
Council Pop Orphanite Anti-Social Brigade, informally as the Orphanites and a record label that claims to be guided by the ghost of John
Peel. As a band they have learnt to buy bananas from service stations to gain best value for money and, once, nearly froze to death
sleeping in Soho Square in the middle of winter.

In the wake of Shop Local's 'cult' success, Orphan Boy began working on a new more melodic, more musical and more
introspective direction (working title of Lad Art).

As the band put it:

"Passion, Pain & Loyalty was written for all the people who listen to records alone in their bedrooms and stare
out of the windows late into the night. It's still got the energy and imagination of the first record, but the music is bigger this
time. It's sharper, deeper and more accomplished. We like to think that it could become one of the last great rock 'n' roll records.
Which, for three scruffs from Grimsby, would be pretty good going. But even if no one buys it, this record will always be a success
to us, because our aim was to make a great album, and that's what we did."

In the lead up to the release of 'Passion, Pain and Loyalty', Orphan Boy will play the following warm up gigs and festivals.
Full album tour in August/September:

May

Thurs 27th

Spider's Web

Grimsby (Free Event)

Sun 30th

Hungry Pigeon Festival, MOHO
(http://www.wegottickets.com/f/1607)

Manchester

June

Fri 18th

Rock & Goal, Bar Bliss

Leigh (Free Event)

Fri 25th

O'Neil's

Cleethorpes (Free Event)

July

Fri 23rd

Proud, Camden

London

Fri 30th

Ruby Lounge
(BBC INTRODUCING Album Launch)

Manchester (Free Event)

Sat 31st

KENDAL CALLING - Calling Out Stage
(http://www.kendalcalling.co.uk/tickets)

Kendal

August

Fri 6th

Gypsy Tears

Cleethorpes (Free Event)

Orphan Boy are Rob Cross - Guitar, bass, keyboard, Vocals, Paul Smith - Guitar, bass, keyboard, vocals and Chris Day - Drums.

www.myspace.com/orphanboy
www.orphanboy.co.uk
